HOUSEWORK 2021
In 2020, we believe you, like many of us, spent the majority of this year staying indoors, and our senses became more acute around who does what, and how much time is allocated in the domestic space.
Looking into 2021, the acknowledgment of domestic labor is necessary.
In the article “Wages against Housework” that was published in 1975, Silvia Federici brought up the concept of “viewing wages for housework as a political perspective”. This act aims not just to receive a wage for the housework but more precisely as a political act. This helps transform the discussion and bring attention to the value, time, environment of housework, and different roles (nurse, chief, cleaning staff, teacher, etc.) that the person functions under the term “housework”.
HOUSEWORK 2021 is a planner, that serves both as a way to document our daily activities and all the housework done at home. We created charts with a variety of house chores, each with an assigned code that will be used to track your activities and calculate your housework wages. This one-year calendar format was designed to speak to the longevity, repetition, and consistency needed in the household duty. The work’s goal is to point out the failure of not attributing the label of labor to housework and instead, portraying it as labor of care and love.
By the end of the year 2021, we hope to recognize the amount of work and care that we contribute to the domestic environment and reflect on the weighted value of all the chores completed.
